How
are your computer skills?
If you have the majority of skills listed below,
then you are ready for online learning. It’s
that simple.
- I can turn on and shut down my computer
- I can connect to the Internet
- I can contact my Internet service provider
for technical assistance
- I can use a mouse to click, double-click, drag
and drop
- I can use a word processing program (ex. Microsoft
Word) to enter text
- I can use a file manager to find and save files
- I can use a file compression program (ex. Winzip)
- I can start software programs such as web browsers
(ex. Netcape Navigator or Internet Explorer)
If using a browser, you will need to know how
to use its basic functions:
- I can enter URLs in the location bar
- I can move back and forth between pages
- I can save locations as bookmarks
- I can refresh or reload pages
- I can use links
- I know how to “download” information
on my computer
- I currently have an email address
- I know how to send and receive email messages
- I know how to attach a file to an email message
- I know how to “paste” text from
a word processor into an email message
- I know how to receive a file attachment from
incoming email
Before starting an online
course or program –
- Be sure that you have the proper equipment
to help you proceed with your online education
experience with as few interruptions or problems
as possible.
The minimum
browser requirements are:
- Internet Explorer 5.1 for the Macintosh
- Internet
Explorer 5 for the PC
- Netscape 4.7 for the Macintosh
- Netscape 4.7
for the PC
- Mozilla Firefox 1.0.7 for Windows
or Mozilla Firefox 1.5 for Windows
Update to the
latest browsers :
If your computer can support a later version,
it is recommended you get the newest non-beta release
available.
• Check the site of the institution you
choose for requirements specific to the institution.
Generally, as with most other major purchases,
it is good advice to choose a reputable brand from
a reputable source.
